Scientific evidence and policy for community forest concessions in Peten, Guatemala: Lessons learned and future challenges

  • The community forest concessions in Peten, Guatemala are a governance model that for more than two decades has served as a pillar for forest conservation in the Multiple Use Zone (MUZ) of the Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR), generating important benefits for forest dependent communities, the Peten region, and Guatemalan society at large.
  • The recognition of forest management rights has allowed communities to generate positive social, economic and environmental impacts.
  • The community concessions stand out for their ability to adapt to constant change, as well as the diversity of legal entities and management models adopted by the community forest enterprises that operate the concessions.
  • The lessons learned in the MUZ are useful when analyzing governance conditions in other zones of the MBR, particularly the buffer zone, to identify mechanisms that guarantee forest integrity from a territorial perspective.
  • The first 25-year term of community forest concession contracts is coming to end and the community forest enterprises require secure rights over the long term to continue making the investments and operations needed to ensure the sustainability of the forest resources in the MUZ.
