A network of programs promoting healthy mangrove forests has amassed valuable data on the state of mangroves in East Africa, built scientific capacity there to track the health of the forests, and now seeks to document and share sustainable management practices with local communities and governments.

It hung elegantly between grey clouds and the shimmering canal, a memory from the 1700s when this Vietnamese city was an international trading port.

Mangroves provide societies with food, fiber, fuel and protection from storms. More recently, studies conducted by the Forest Service have shown that intact mangrove forests store more carbon than any other tropical or temperate forested ecosystem.
