The societal benefits derived from wetlands are particularly significant in Africa, where coastal inhabitants rely heavily on mangroves for their livelihoods and other economic needs. There is increasing urgency to integrate communities more extensively and formally into the management of mangroves and wetlands across Africa, and provide them with the capacity and tools to do so more effectively. Currently, SWAMP is working in seven countries across the continent: Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Madagascar, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Botswana.
SWAMP activities in Africa are designed to address specific applied research demands regarding mangroves and peat-based ecosystems. The SWAMP team is actively involved in capacity building activities, including knowledge sharing with journalists on peatland and mangrove issues in Africa.
