Forest certification in Central Africa faces obstacles and constraints that make sustainable forest management in the Congo Basin difficult. Removing these obstacles and mitigating these constraints would increase the effectiveness of the struggle against deforestation and forest degradation. The objective of this project is to identify and analyze these obstacles and constraints to study the possibilities of their mitigation. The project will assess the social, economic and environmental added value of certification, according to the principles of sustainable development, taking into account gender concerns and social and environmental justice. Beyond certification, the project will study and evaluate sustainable forest management in the Congo Basin, by analyzing the synergies between certification, FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) and REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation of Carbon Stocks). The theoretical and conceptual framework envisaged is based on three concepts: policy diffusion and implementation, territorial dynamics, and environmental justice. They will be deployed in a multidisciplinary approach articulated on political ecology. Research will be carried out mainly in Cameroon, but also in Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo. The results will be disseminated to forest concessionaires and other stakeholders so that these results help them to initiate and/or easily finalize the certification and sustainable management of forest concessions. The results obtained can also contribute to the strengthening of national forest policies with a view to sustainable forest management in the Congo Basin countries.
