Globally, around 1 billion hectares have been committed to land restoration. Ecosystem restoration, inclusive of all ecosystems spanning terrestrial, inland water, marine, and coastal areas, is a powerful nature-based solution and/or ecosystem-based approach to multiple crises including biodiversity loss, climate change, and land degradation, which severely affect livelihoods in many regions of the world.
The next seven years are critical as we accelerate toward the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. With so much at stake, expectations have never been higher for ecosystem restoration to deliver substantial benefits. However, ecosystem restoration can only deliver the desired benefits if it is effective, which requires careful planning using a minimum set of criteria. Progress should be transparently monitored and reported to improve adaptive management and ensure accountability against ambitious commitments.
This event will explore the needs of the countries as they take stock of current initiatives and review commitments toward developing or revising effective restoration plans for multiple synergistic outcomes across multilateral environmental agreements and other international pledges. These plans would be developed and incorporated into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans according to national priorities and circumstances.
