Sustainable management of soils in drylands from a soil health perspective

Drylands are significantly important due to their ecological, economic, and social roles. over 2 billion people are supported by drylands. They are vital for food security especially in Africa and Asia. The ability of dryland species and populations to survive extreme conditions can inform strategies for coping with global climate challenges.

Soil health challenges in drylands include water scarcity, low Soil fertility, salinization and erosion. These challenges contribute to reduced agricultural productivity in drylands. Hence the need to manage dryland soils for improved ecological, economic, and social impact of drylands.

Management of dryland soils for improved sustainability of agricultural practices, resilience to climate variability and extreme weather conditions requires strategies that enhance soil resilience, improve water retention and ensure sustainable productivity through the collaboration of stakeholders. Effective dryland management strategies coupled with targeted relevant soil health indicators/standards can help prevent some soil health challenges faced in dry lands.

This event aims to assess and develop more targeted and relevant soil health indicators/standards specific to dryland systems. The output of this event will inform the UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework progress indicators SO1 and SO2-1 by providing targeted and relevant soil health indicators/standards specific to dryland systems. Which will help improve the condition of dryland soils and livelihood of farmers dependent on dryland agriculture.
