21 Oct – 1 Nov 2024, Cali, ColombiaScaling up Young Engagement in implementing Target 3 of the GBF: Lessons and challenges from the ground
The implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM GBF) requires a whole of society approach. Globally, more than 50% of the population is under 30. Youth engagement is therefore crucial for the implementation of the GBF to be successful in the present and in the future. Youth can take biodiversity action in the present, in the future, they will ensure sustainability of existing policies and initiatives while championing new ones, that is only possible if they are effectively engaged.
Their engagement is crucial for all targets, including Target 3 on conserving 30% of land, waters and seas which is achieved through Protected Areas and Other Effect Area Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). Since the primary responsibility of these areas is intertwined with land ownership regimes, therefore led by government agencies or communities as per policies of respective countries, youth tend to be left out of the equation. This results in the growing negative sentiments about PAs and OECMs. For PAs and OCEMs to be successful, they need support and ownership from those who leave around them, including youth who are a key demographic in communities.
Good practices exist across the world, on how youth can be effectively engaged in the management and governance of Protected Areas and OECMs. This event will together stakeholders from Africa, Latin South America and Europe to explore the role of youth in conserving protected areas and OECMs, while addressing challenges and opportunities to this effect.
