This document summarizes a study on smallholder timber production in Central Java, Indonesia. Key findings include: 1) Over 200 smallholder households were surveyed, finding most plant fast-growing species like sengon, teak, and mahogany. Production is becoming more regulated through requirements like SKAU certificates. 2) Key informant interviews and policy analysis found that Indonesia's SVLK legality verification system will require increased formalization of smallholder timber production. 3) The study provides recommendations on how to formalize production, including strengthening support institutions, tailoring certification to harvest cycles, and providing incentives for adhering to regulations.
