Description
About 65% of Africa’s farmland and 50% of the total land area in Tanzania is degraded, posing a serious problem for rural communities who directly rely on the land for their livelihood. Degraded agricultural landscapes are vulnerable to climate change effects and hence adversely affecting the adaptive capacity of rural communities. This USAID funded OREL project will address these challenges by providing knowledge and tools to support on-farm restoration efforts in Tanzania. The project has identified three interrelated result areas aimed at synthesizing knowledge gaps, tools and approaches, and the enabling environment for sustainable on-farm restoration and the associated nature-based solutions (tree-based inputs and products, carbon market and circular bioeconomy opportunities) to support landscape restoration for multiple livelihood and environmental benefits. Desk-top analysis of secondary information and data from CIFOR-ICRAF and other partners will be completed with stakeholder surveys to provide the nation level assessment of status, gaps and needs for on-farm land restoration to inform future programs in Tanzania.
