CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Description

Kennemer Foods International Inc. (KFI) is implementing Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR) activities under its Mindanao Tree Planting Program for Climate and Communities (MinTrees) Project. MinTrees aims to explore financing strategies for rural development that involve sustainable agri-business, soft loan agri-lending, development grants and climate finance. In this context, KFI is interested in how it can maximize the carbon potential of the ARR program, considering different planting conditions in Southern Mindanao. To maximize carbon potential, the Project needs to obtain information about carbon benefits derived from different systems and management practices across different biophysical conditions.

Meanwhile, ICRAF is currently implementing the Sustainable Farming in Tropical Asian Landscapes (SFITAL) Project in Davao de Oro, which aims to link small-scale producers to global supply chains in an environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially responsible manner.

Based on an analysis of SFITAL and MinTrees KFI and ICRAF identified data needs, gaps, methods and recommendations. In this project ICRAF responds to that analysis through 1) Literature review on various Restoration activities in Southern Mindanao; 2) Calibration and parameterization of the SExI-FS model; 3) Restoration models on scenario building and plot level-design recommendation; and 4) Final report including recommendation with optimized carbon storage curves for all recommended restoration models.
