Description
This study continues recent UMP collaboration with PT ADARO to coordinate community-based and forest reclamation and rehabilitation research on ex-mining area. CIFOR contributes to this work by assessing bioenergy species (nyamplung / Calophyllum inophyllum L.) for peatland restoration in Central Kalimantan. In this project, CIFOR supports the restoration design activities and report writing. PT ADARO is a coal mining company in the area and is concerned about social management, forest rehabilitation and ex-mining reclamation.
This study's general objectives are to empower local community and increase the community awareness to protect peatland ecosystem through the bioenergy development program; hence, by managing peatland in a proper and sustainable manner, this fragile ecosystem can sustain and support the community livelihood. This collaboration specifically aims to 1) be part of capacity building to allow transfer skill and knowledge between CIFOR Scientists and UMP researchers, 2) support degraded peatland restoration activities in Indonesia that will benefit future generation, 3) maintain CIFOR-UMP collaboration to develop research in bioenergy species for non timber forest product (NTFP) that has been started through Species Trial CIFOR-UMP 2016 Project.
