Description
The Nouveaux Paysages du Congo (New Landscapes of Congo) Project (NPC) is closely linked to the policy for combating climate change in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The general objective is to convert the largely degraded and unproductive landscape of Yangambiin to a center of sustainable development based on conservation and the development of agronomic and renewable energy sectors.
The specific objectives of the NPC Project are:
1. Encourage and sustainably enhance agricultural, fish and forest production through training, applied research and the dissemination of good practices for the socioeconomic development of rural populations around the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve.
2. Mitigate the deforestation of natural ecosystems and increase the sequestration of carbon dioxide f protection, restoration, enhancement and sustainable management of natural resources in and around the reserve.
3. Strengthen regional planning efforts and the commitment of local politicians to extending the landscape approach to other areas.
The project aims to achieve the following over three years:
1. Agricultural, fish farming and forestry sectors created, structured and suppling Kisangani by creating green jobs and small and medium-sized enterprises within the landscape.
2. Agroforestry plantations installed, to supply renewable woody biomass to the co-generation plant (FORETS Project) setting up a carbon sink.
3. Pressures on animal biodiversity (bushmeat) relieved by increasing domestic production of animal proteins, while plant biodiversity through alternative livelihood generation.
4. Spatial planning promoted on the basis of good technical and economic practices and the strengthening of local governance.
