CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Description

This project is a continuation of the two phases conducted by CIFOR from 2018 - 2020. In 2018 (phase 1) CIFOR developed a typology for DMPA (Desa Makmur Peduli Api) villages, developed a standard for and policy to scale up DMPA. In Phase 2, CIFOR developed business models in systematic and participatory ways. Following phase 2, in phase 3, we focus on Pinang Sebatang Barat (PSB) Village in Siak Regency and aim to add value to existing business models and strengthen the current institutions.

The overall goal is to support gradual behavior change within local communities to move away from the use of fire in land preparation and farming. This is done through: (a) implementation of the community-level business models (CLBM) in PSB Village that prevent fires and improve livelihoods, (b) mainstreaming the CLBM for fire prevention and peatland restoration among community members and village governments, and (c) communicating the CLBM best practices and successes for fire prevention and livelihoods to domestic and international funders, public or private institutions such as APHI and GAPKI member companies, international organizations, sub-national governments, i.e., Riau, South Sumatra and West Kalimantan Governments, and national governments such as Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM), Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, and CSOs such as Riau Community Peatland Network (JMGR) and various village-based concern communities (e.g., MPA, KTPA) to embed these in development programs for scaling.
