Description
Intensification of tree-based farming through the integration of fruit and fodder trees transform landscapes and livelihoods by enhancing household nutrition and income. To this end, the Africa RISING project had introduced high value tree crops (improved Avocado varieties and Apple) at project target woredas in Ethiopia in its first and second phases of the project to help improve the livelihoods of smallholders there. Capacity building of local practitioners and farmers, on propagation and management of high value fruit trees including postharvest handling of fruits, marketing and value chain development, is critical for promoting production and sustainability in the target woredas and beyond.
The availability and access to appropriate skills and knowledge resources such as extension learning materials, brochures, field guides, enhance the handling, scaling up and adoption of the introduced high value tree crops production technology. Thus, the objectives of this proposal is 1) to prepare extension learning manuals based on existing project experiences for further intensification of high value tree production practices in farming 2) to develop a policy brief which can be used as reference material to administrators and agricultural officers in their effort to resolve/give solutions to factors hindering the expansion of high value tree crops production 3) As part of the capacity building effort, to conduct training workshops to ensure the capacity development of local partners where they can also discuss progress, challenges, and opportunities in high-value tree production practices 4) to support the efforts in the photo book production and the preparation of scientific papers for special issue journal publication.
