Description
Empowering improved multidisciplinary watershed management and monitoring involves the synergy of data, skills and resources from forestry and fisheries domains. The project, Resilient River Basins, addresses food security issues while harmonising with the objectives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and addressing the needs for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life. The four components initially address issues relating to the sustainable use of ecosystem resources in the Zambezi river basin such as building awareness of upstream and downstream connections, the importance of freshwater ecosystems for food security, and forest and riparian forest management. All four components of the project run simultaneously and each one focuses on key activities which are aimed to synergise multidisciplinary approaches surrounding the forestry and fisheries nexus. This innovative approach in multidisciplinary practice initially developed in Zambia will then be used to extend the project in river basins located in other countries through a knowledge transfer step that builds upon the experience, tools and guidance gained.
