CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Description

Through donations from the Global Giving foundation this project supports coal miners in Bosnia to buy planting material and set up a tree nursery.
Coal is the main energy source in Bosnia but pollutes the air and heats the climate. Coal miners in the country are now starting to plant fast-growing willow trees for biomass for energy, heat and new green jobs. This restores the degraded land and reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Last year the miners successfully planted 30,000 trees - in 2022 they want to plant eight times more.
