Description
Capturing the forest sector's contribution to food and nutrition security and to monitoring the sustainable use of forest resources is essential to valuing the contribution made by forest products to diets, livelihoods and local economies. While FAO has compiled data on wood production and trade for over 70 years, these data reflect only a part of the contribution made by the forest sector. At present, limited data exist for forest products other than wood, otherwise known as Non-wood forest products (NWFPs). These products include forest mushrooms, fruits, nuts, medicinal and aromatic plants, game and fish, insects, honey, fibers, resins, gums, saps and oils. These products can be an important source of resilience in the food system or in local economies while incentivizing sustainable forest management. In this project we synthesize available evidence on NWFP collection in Zambia; collect data to explore the use of important NWFP in several regions; help to advise on policymakers on the implementation of the recommendations from the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition of the Committee on World Food Security (HLPE) with respect to NWFP regulation.
