Description
A high human population density and growth, scarcity of arable land for food production and supply of wood energy for cooking in Rwanda has led to over-exploitation and degradation of trees/shrub resources with consecutive exposure of land to severe soil erosion. Recent analysis indicate that approximately 37% (374,130 ha) of the Eastern Province is degraded and responsible for approximately 21% of soil erosion in Rwanda.
By accelerating application of agroforestry and sylvopastural technologies, this project works with partners in Eastern province of Rwanda to re-energize tree planting activities by availing knowledge, materials and monitoring skills to support:
-Acquisition of diverse tree genetic resources to improve current planting practices and infuse knowledge on tree management for market opportunities.
-Improve capacity through trainings geared to improving tree growing as solution to rural development and ecosystem restoration.
-Implement simple but robust tree planting monitoring tools for implemented tree planting activities
