Descriptions
Peat-IMPACTS Indonesia is a four-year project funded by the German government's International Climate Initiative (IKI) to restore, manage, and protect Indonesia's vital peatlands. This initiative aligns with Indonesia's strong commitment to reduce emissions, as reflected in the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Achieving these targets is challenging as Indonesia possesses the largest extent of tropical peat in the world. Peat-IMPACTS supports Indonesia in achieving sustainable, climate-smart peatland management through a transformative landscape approach. This approach combines technical and institutional capacities to restore peat landscapes in alignment with the public and private sectors.
The project raises awareness among key stakeholders about the risks of peat fires and associated emissions. Additionally, Peat-IMPACTS supports the integration of peatland management into broader landscape management initiatives and provides skills training for smallholders in paludiculture management. These efforts help safeguard local livelihoods, and the project ensures that lessons learned are shared nationwide. CIFOR-ICRAF partners with the Soil and Fertilizer Instrument Standard Testing Center (BPSI Soil and Fertilizer) and the Ministry of Agriculture to implement this project in Ogan Komering Ilir and Banyuasin Districts in South Sumatra Province and Kubu Raya District in West Kalimantan Province.
