Description
In January 2016, Indonesia submitted a Forest Reference Emissions Level (FREL) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This project aims to improve that FREL by generating more accurate emission factors from land-use activities and also by including currently underrepresented land-use dynamics. The existing FREL is used as the project baseline.
Outputs that are delivered include:
- A report assessing the transparency, accuracy, completeness, consistency and comparability of the current FREL
- A report identifying underrepresented forest dynamics (sources/sinks) in wetlands
- A database with the EFs and AD submitted for the current FREL, and the EFs (IPCC default values) and AD for the missing emissions/sources.
These outputs will be delivered to the National Focal Point to the UNFCCC, of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's Directorate General of Climate Change, who will submit Indonesia's improved FREL to the UNFCCC Secretariat on behalf of the government.
The International Tropical Peatland Center (ITPC) Coordinator, at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is responsible for running the Interim Secretariat of the Center to ensure knowledge exchange and sharing take place.
The project creates opportunities to engage other countries in the ITPC and foster South-South collaboration, which is mandated to the Center. Virtual and actual platforms like the Global Landscape Forum, facilitate policy dialogues, technical capacity development and awareness raising around the importance of tropical peatlands for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
