Descriptions
FAO is conducting a review of case studies on exemplary forest management collected under the initiative “In Search of Excellence” (ISOE) initiated in 2001. This follow-up to the ISOE initiative aims to identify how the recent policy, socio-economic and environmental changes have influenced forest management and draw lessons on long-term success factors for sustainable forest management (SFM). The review includes cases that have remained successful as well as those that have failed for various reasons. Forests' role in preventing and mitigating natural disasters and enhancing resilience are given emphasis in reviewing the cases.
The key output of this initiative is a publication comprising the case studies, regional findings and global synthesis that identifies the enabling factors and essential components of SFM in the current context. It also shed light on how the objectives and practices of forest management have changed in recent decades. The purpose of this LoA is to conduct case studies and develop regional synthesis for Central Africa under the initiative “Revisiting exemplary forest management: Successes, failures and lessons learned”.
