Abstract
This is the preparation phase in which we develop a full project document for The SAGU Project. SAGU aims to halt or limit the degradation and loss of peatland ecosystems in lowland and upland landscapes of Borneo and New Guinea by addressing root causes such as insufficient assessment of peatland location, extent and function; unsustainable economic uses; weak monitoring and research capacity; and deficits in networking and communication. The Project will ensure that (1) peatland data is improved to strengthen policy, planning and monitoring for peatland conservation, protection and restoration; (2) conservation education, outreach and training are expanded through improved institutional structures and processes; and (3) local residents participate in management measures to protect intact peatlands and restore degraded peatlands. The intended impact is that governments have fully incorporated sustainable peatland management and GHG emission reduction targets for relevant jurisdictions into updated NDCs and social economic development planning.
