Description
Vietnam, with its long coastline, is vulnerable to climate change. Although mangroves make up just 3.5% of the total national forest area, they play an outsized role in local livelihood incomes, mitigating impacts of storm surges and coastal erosion, and supporting carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Despite this vast contribution, mangrove areas are under high pressure from conversion for aquaculture production and infrastructure development. To compound matters, indigenous people and local communities around and within mangrove areas have limited income sources and access to information and financial resources. This in turn, limits their motivation and ability to protect and plant mangroves.
In response, this project develops and builds innovative financing mechanisms, transformative partnerships, and inclusive decision-making processes for more equitable access to blue carbon market benefits for indigenous people, local communities, women and youth, giving these important constituencies greater incentive and capacity to protect and restore mangrove forest in Vietnam.
