CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Description

The proposed programme aims to restore the land and livelihoods of 305,000 small-scale farming households, covering an area of approximately 275,000 hectares. It will enhance ecosystem services and carbon sinks, using locally appropriate EverGreening practices, in order to sequester 11,350,543 tCO2e and generate 8,512,907 certified carbon credits for the benefit of local communities and the investor. To improve the landscapes and livelihoods across Malawi, the programme will take a multi-faceted, evidence-based approach to strengthen social, institutional and economic infrastructure, and will develop equitable agroforestry value chains and ecosystem-based businesses (include the engagement with carbon markets) that underpin the sustainability of scaling-up positive impacts being realised through Evergreening practices.

The Programme goal is to improve livelihoods, food security and resilience to climate change in Malawi through restoring ecosystem services and improved management of agricultural, pastoral and forest areas contributing to emissions reductions. This programme will enable and build substantial carbon sinks and sequestration opportunities, allowing viable returns to both farmers and investors.
