Description
Indonesia is the number one palm oil-producing country worldwide. The country has enjoyed the economic benefits of this commodity while experiencing the environmental and social problems associated with expanding oil palm cultivation. The expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia involves companies, ‘plasma’-scheme farmers and independent smallholders. Through the Biodiverse and Inclusive Palm Oil Supply Chain (BIPOSC) project, the Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming (L3F) strives to contribute to the oil palm industry’s sustainable pathway by promoting Regenerative Agriculture (RA) practices among independent smallholders in Labuhanbatu Regency in North Sumatra Province. In particular, the project will foster oil palm replanting in a transition from monoculture to agroforestry systems.
World Agroforestry (ICRAF) provides a technical advisory role and support on the design, analysis, provision and monitoring of oil palm agroforestry solutions related to the agronomic and economic performance of independent oil palm smallholders. At ICRAF, this activity is also known as the SOPANS (Sustainable Oil Palm Agroforestry concept for North Sumatra) project. In carrying out these roles, ICRAF works closely with SNV Indonesia and Musim Mas, the primary BIPOSC project implementors.
