CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Abstract

The R-CAPTD project targets reclamation of degraded lands as well as sustainable management of agricultural and forest landscapes. These targets include the restoration and development of more than 5 million hectares of degraded land (corresponding to 55% of the current total area of degraded land in the country) and the prevention of degradation of non-degraded land by 2030. These restoration objectives are in line with the option of strengthening its resilience through the implementation of actions with an estimated GHG emission reduction potential of 33072.72 Gg CO2eq or 30.76% compared to the Business-as-Usual scenario (BAU).

Trees are essential for this restoration effort to be successful. Successful tree planting provides significant environmental services and livelihood benefits. A key problem is however that many planting initiatives falter because they make poorly-informed decisions about what trees to plant where, for what purpose, strongly exacerbated by climate change. Availability and access to quality tree-planting materials suited to location, climate and purpose is a principle constraint to tree planting.

The GCF Readiness support activities enable CNSF and associated institutions and networks as the primary beneficiaries to meet the following objectives (i) to establish adequate sectoral expertise, systems and networks to support the planning, programming and implementation of GCF-funded activities as well as activities with other funding (see table 2.2) in the area of climate appropriate portfolios of tree diversity (CAPTD); (ii) to develop a strategy and work programme, that are aligned with the priorities of the country, including country programmes and the GCF result areas, (iii) to prepare and submit quality project concept notes to support future funding proposals that target implementation of CAPTD in Burkina Faso, and (iv) to develop and share with national, regional and international partners best practices and partnerships to foster development and dissemination of methods, frameworks, and information systems for enhanced climate finance programming at subnational, national, and regional levels.
