CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Local community perceptions of change and climate variability in tropical forests of Papua (Indonesia)

According to local people in Mamberamo Raya Regency (in Indonesia's province of Papua), there have been three types of major events related to climate variability in the past 10 years - flash flooding, extreme heat, and strong winds. The local people have strategies for adapting to climate variability, and given that there is no local meteorological station, their detailed knowledge is an important complementary source of information. This presentation suggests that the similarities and gaps between local knowledge and technical knowledge should be used to direct future research. CIFOR-CIRAD scientist Manuel Boissière, together with CIFOR colleague Michael Padmanaba, gave this presentation at a session titled 'Traditional ecological knowledge and resilience in the context of global environmental change' at the 13th Congress of the International Society of Ethnobiology, held on 20-25 May 2012 in Montpellier, France.
