CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Session 5.3 effects of shade, altitude, landscapes on coffee pests in east africa

This document summarizes two studies on the effects of shade and landscape composition on coffee pests in East Africa. The first study found that shady plantations at lower altitudes had higher infestations of white stemborer but lower infestations of coffee berry borer. The second study found that the effect of local shade on lacebug populations depended on the amount of tree cover in the surrounding landscape. Overall, the document concludes that the impact of shade on pest populations can vary depending on the specific pest, altitude, and landscape context.
