CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Beating Famine: Landscape restoration in Southern Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa faces challenges of growing population, low food production, and land degradation. Over 200 million people are undernourished and 6 million hectares of productive land are lost each year. Approaches that can boost agricultural productivity and scale up landscape restoration include rainwater harvesting, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, integrated soil fertility management, and integrated landscape approaches. These approaches could be applied on 300 million hectares in sub-Saharan Africa to improve food security and restore degraded land. The session will include presentations on successful landscape restoration projects in Ethiopia, the Sahel, and Malawi, followed by discussion on recommendations for national action plans.
