CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Session 6.1 Managing community forest for food security, nepal

This document discusses the link between forests and food security in Nepal. While scholars have asserted the importance of forests for food production, forest policies and institutions in Nepal have been restrictive to food security. Community forestry rules have limited fodder production and grazing, contributing to a decline in the number of cattle per household. The document examines how responsive community forestry institutions in Nepal are to linking forests with food security through a literature review and case studies. Main conclusions are that forestry science, policies, and community forestry rules have undermined local concerns about using forests for food security. An adaptive approach is needed to better integrate forest, tree, and agricultural production.
