Good procedure for seed collection handling and storage
is important whether the seed is destined for research
purposes or for dissemination by afforestation programmes.
Careful selection of parent trees can reduce the likelihood
of inbreeding and thus maintain a greater degree of genetic
diversity. Appropriate handling and storage can prolong significantly the viability of the seed and maxiniize germination
rates. In this section guidelines are given for
the collection handling and storage of seed destined
for planting programmes rather than specifically for research (selection strategies in seed collection for research purposes are
discussed in more detail in Section 8.1)
