CIFOR-ICRAF: Building resilient landscapes

In January 2019, the most trusted international research organizations on forests and trees – the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) – decided to merge to support resilient terrestrial landscapes across the planet. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other key partners provided critical support.
Three years later, CIFOR-ICRAF is positioned to respond to the greatest crises of our time, with a single governing Board and leadership team and harmonized internal processes guided by the CIFOR-ICRAF Strategy 2020–2030. This 44-page report outlines the why, when and how of the merger and the creation of Resilient Landscapes, CIFOR-ICRAF’s new private-sector-facing arm, which is catalysing investments in nature-based solutions from the private sector and financial institutions.
Detailing three new innovative approaches – Transformative Partnership Platforms, Engagement Landscapes and Flagship Products, it describes undertakings and impacts in agroecology, restoration, food and nutrition security, improved tree genetic resources, and more, from sustainable oil palm in Brazil to cocoa agroforestry in Cameroon to agroforestry on sloping land in Northwest Viet Nam.
