%X Maize (Zea mays) is the staple food crop in much of Malawi, and the cropping system is dominated by this crop. Maize accounts for 60% or more of cropped area in Malawi (Kumwenda et al. 1996). Food security in resource-poor households is critically linked to the productivity and sustainability of maize-based cropping system.
