Farmers in western Kenya are facing problems brought on by rapidpopulation growth that are negatively affecting the productivity ofagriculture and natural resources of the area. The situation has seriousimplications for the economy and the ability of the people to be self-sufficient in their food supply. With shrinking land holdings and lack ofcredit facilities, crop yields and animal productivity are declining.Traditional agricultural production practices that preserved and sus-tained the natural resource base are dying out. Continuous croppingwith little or no inputs is now the norm. Households lack sufficientsupplies of food, fuelwood and fodder, and declining income levelslimit the options farmers have to reverse this trend.
