Historically, researchers with various degrees of self-interest have a largely chosen which species of indigenous fruit trees should receive their attention. Such subjectively has led to sub optimal use of resources, as rigorous priority setting requires an understanding of user needs and preferences, technological opportunities and systematic methods for ranking species.
