A global research program was started in 1994 to search for sustainable alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture. Funds were obtained from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to start a cooperation between a large number of international institutes and a group of national research institutions( in phase 1: Indonesia, Brazil and Cameroon.)
