AB This book tells the story of landcare and its development in the Philippines, particularly within the southern island of Mindanao. The Philippines consists of more than 7000 islands, with a population of about 76 million people and an inhabitable area of about 30 million hectares. Five million of these hectares are unproductive due to environmental degradation. The upland watershed areas, where about one-third of the population lives, are those that are the most affected by the adverse affects of agricultural development. Philippines landcare had its beginnings in the municipality of Claveria in the northern province of Misamis Oriental. (See the map below.) It developed further in the central Bukidnon municipality of Lantapan, and the southern remote barangay of Ned in South Cotabato. Later it took root in the Visayan islands of Bohol and Leyte.
