Chapter 14 - Tree Domestication in Agroforestry: Progress in the Second Decade (2003–2012)

The second decade of agroforestry tree domestication (2003-2012) has been characterized by more detailed and intensive studies of some 16 research topics spanning many biophysical and social science disciplines, especially in clonal propagation and genetic characterization of tree-to-tree variation. Likewise, there has been substantial spread of the approach to Latin America and Oceania, as well as to regions of Africa outside of the humid tropics where it originated. Another development has been the increased use of molecular and other laboratory technologies to enhance the understanding of genetic diversity, and to identify opportunities for the selection of traits important to new food and nonfood industries based on agroforestry tree products. A forward look to the third decade foresees further developments in all these directions, together with the protection of the intellectual property of innovative farmers.
