CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

The establishment, development and growth of Dendrocalamus hamiltonii Nees and Arn under field conditions in Kenya

A study to investigate the most suitable materials for the propagation of Dendrocalamus hamiltonii and its field establishment at coast, central and lake regions of Kenya was carried out. Growth dynamics of the species was monitored for 3.5 years at coast and 2.5 years at the rest of the experimental sites. D. hamiltonii was easily propagated through cuttings which established, survived and grew well in the field. Rhizomes and offsets also established and survived well but not as rated for cutting materials. The species had better growth rates and survival at the coast and lake basin sites in comparison to the highland site at Muguga. Through cuttings and at 4-5 meter spacing, the species is therefore recommended for planting in warm areas like the coast and Lake Victoria basin region
