AB Agroforestry is an age old concept which now encompasses a diverse set of integrated land use practices employed for variety of purposes. Agroforestry presently is one of the ways to protect and compensate the loss of forest cover; provide the benefits that otherwise will be obtained from already over-exploited forests; increase environmental sustainability; enhance the production of food, fodder, fuelwood, and timber; reduce soil erosion and degradation; assist rehabilitation of degraded lands; enhance soil organic matter; remove atmospheric carbon through sequestration; support biodiversity and provide many other social, religious, and aesthetic benefits. The paper presents historical development of agroforestry and an overview of agroforestry systems in Asia and Africa.
