Morphological and molecular classification of local mango varieties in Kenya as a prerequisite for conservation of their genetic resources

Local mango (Mangifera indica) varieties in Eastern and Central Kenya are considered as drought resistant and less susceptible to pests and diseases. This characteristics make them interesting for breeding purposes, but due to low market value of their rather small fruits and the increased cultivation of improved commercial mango varieties the number of local mango trees decreased over time. Thus, their genetic resources are threatened by genetic erosion. At present, very little is known about Kenyan local mango varieties, and no information is available about the total number of local varieties in Kenya. In order to explore, utilize and conserve these valuable genetic resources clear variety identification and characterization is required.
