Massive deforestation has been taking place in developing countries, resulting in deterioration of ecological environments and greater scarcity of forest resources, such as firewood fodder and timber. Cleared land is often used in low input shifting cultivation , a system that cannot meet the needs of growing populations. Even though this scenario describes a substantial proportion of rural setting in developing countries, some positive natural resources trends are also occurring. For example, reforestation has followed deforestation in selected forest in the hiil region of Nepal(Chapter 8) and northern Vietman (chapter 7). The use of agroforestry is significant and and often growing, such as the growing of commercial trees that are inter-cropped with annual crops when the trees are young . Example include cocoa in Ghana (Chapter 3), coffee and other trees in Uganda (Chapter 6) and rubber and cinnamon in sumatra (chapter 4).
