Indigenous fallow management

In this lecture note, we will look at the fallow concept from the perspective of the primary userof the fallow, the farmer. As such, we will challenge the concept of a fallow as beingtemporarily unused land, a common thought of many policymakers and scientists. Case studiesfrom farming communities throughout Southeast Asia will show that fallows are in factcarefully managed by farmers. This is done in order to achieve direct economic benefits throughproducing economic valuable products and/or biological (indirect economic) benefits throughrestoring soil fertility for food cropping.
