This chapter sets out to establish the context for detailed analysis, at the process level, of the biological basis of soil fertility which are presented in the other chapters of the book. The main focus of this chapter is on soil fertility as a component of sustainable agriculture but it is believed that the same principles are equally applicable to other forms of land management
