Tropical soils, climate and agriculture: an ecological divide?

The author attempts to analyze the central issue that makes it difficult to raise agricultural productivity in the tropics. The question whether there is an ecological divide between tropical and temperate regions forms the main body of the document. Tropical climates and soils are thus discussed and then relate to the productivity of annual crops, (trees and pastures are not included).
