Tree shade and coffee interactions in the northern Lake Kivu region, Rwanda

A survey of coffee performance under and outside mature tree crowns on 50 smallholder farms was undertaken in the northern Lake Ki vu area of Rwanda. Berry and parch yields were significantly higher in shaded than unshaded conditions and differences declined over the five weeks measured in the coffee season. In contrast there were no significant differences in cup quality parameters of acidity, flavor, body and aftertaste
