The earthquake and subsequent tsunami of 26 December 2004 killed nearly quarter million people in thecoastal zones around the Indian Ocean and displaced 2 million more who lost their houses and otherassets as well as livelihood options. An unprecedented pledge of assistance matched the disaster, withIndonesia and Sri Lanka as main targets.
