Several examples are given to illustrate the process of exploratory statistical analysis. General topics highlighted include: summaries to meet objectives; response variables and appropriate scales; carrying out the exploratory analysis; understanding uncertainties, by reviewing the basic concepts of estimation; hypothesis testing and significance; and analysis of variance. The concept of statistical model and a practical and simple approach to doing the statistical analysis are illustrated
