Tapping into local agroecological knowledge for climate change adaptation: A case study from the Peruvian Andes

Researchers and practitioners increasingly recognize the importance of local knowledge for smallholder farmers’ adaptive capacity to climate change (Nakashima et al. 2012). This is especially true in mountain areas, where, over centuries, local people have developed complex agroecological knowledge and coping strategies in order to maintain productive systems in a context of extreme climatic conditions and high variability. The objective of this research project was to assess the potential application of local knowledge on agroforestry as a response to current climate challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the Andes.
