Sustainability amidst diversity: options for rural households in Mali

This is a summary report presenting results of research into sustainable rural livelihoods carried out in two villages in Mali. First a presentation of the framework used to analyse the case study material given, followed by a description of the complexities of local livelihood systems in the chosen villages; with particular emphasis on differences between those households whose livelihoods are seen as sustainable and those less able to make ends meet. In the next section a discussion of the research methodology is presented; followed by an introduction of the farming systems of the two villages. Following this is an overview of Mali's recent history which has affected the evolution of agriculture and rural lives. A detailed discussion of local institution, agricultural intensification, diversity and migration strategies is presented followed by a summary of the implications of the research for several key policy areas.
